Scranton has a rich history in the 19th century coal and silk industries. It's officially 160 years old, and has experienced expansive and contractive periods in that time. It's currently on the upswing, and there are many fascinating things to see and do.

The Anthracite Museum Don't let the museum's time-worn exterior put you off. The inside is full of fascinating exhibits and photographs focused mainly on Scranton's vibrant past as a hotspot for the mining of anthracite coal.

Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour You can take a tour of an actual (no longer active) coal mine just a few steps from the Anthracite Museum. Call (570) 963-MINE for more information.

Steamtown National Historic Site One of the premier railroad museums in the U.S. Explore restored steam locomotives, railcars, and the massive former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western rail yard.

The Trolley Museum is located on the Steamtown National Historic Site. The museum focuses on the history of electric streetcars and interurban railways that connected cities and towns throughout eastern Pennsylvania during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Baseball! (Why didn't we think of this earlier?!) PNC Field is the home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, and is consistently regarded as one of the nicest stadiums in Minor League Baseball. The RailRiders are the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.

Electric City Aquarium & Reptile Den This compact aquarium featuring aquatic life, reptiles, and interactive exhibits is located in the Steamtown Mall. Think it's unusal for an aquarium to be in a mall? Heck, Electric City Dentistry is in the mall, too!

Nay Aug Park Who expects a thundering waterfall in the middle of an urban park? That, plus a treehouse with great views, basketball courts and a brand new swimming pool for kids make Nay Aug Park a delight. (It's also where you'll find the Everhart Museum.)
